Charlie Weis: It’s Not As Bad As You Think, Actually It Is, But We’re Not Like Michigan Yet.

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on September 2, 2007

There is no football machine like the Notre Dame football machine. They have their own network, tradition so rich & vibrant that thousands worldwide follow them religiously without ever even having watched a game. However, yesterday even Rudy and “touchdown Jesus” couldn’t save them from the ass kicking they received from the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

“Tashard Choice helped Georgia Tech fans forget about the loss of Calvin Johnson. Notre Dame’s three quarterbacks had Fighting Irish fans longing for Brady Quinn.

Choice rushed for a career-high 196 yards and two touchdowns and the Georgia Tech defense had little trouble with Notre Dame’s new passers, forcing two fumbles by Demetrius Jones, sacking Evan Sharpley seven times and keeping Jimmy Clausen from doing any damage in a 33-3 victory Saturday.

“I did not see this coming,” Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey said. “I thought we would play pretty well defensively. I did not know we would run the ball as well as we ran it today.

Taylor Bennett played solidly, completing 11-of-23 passes for 121 yards.

“He did some really good things, and he missed some throws that I had seen him make 50 times in practice,” Gailey said. “The great thing is, he didn’t have to go play great today. He could play good and we could still win.”

Wow, even the battle captain for Ga. Tech is taking pot shots there. The line about his quarterback not playing great but just “good” and still winning is gold. I knew the Georgia Tech fight club would prove to be useful. This will be a long season for the Fighting Irish. They might be wishing they had Quinn back, but he’s to busy being a third string QB for the Cleveland Browns, why not start “super bootlegger” Jimmy Clausen?

“Notre Dame tried to come out and play smash-mouth football — a stark departure from the aerial attack it used the past two seasons behind Quinn.

“We were going in there determined to try to run the ball, make sure we didn’t have negative plays, to make sure we played close to the vest early and got used to the speed of the game with the number of people that were relatively inexperienced,” Weis said. “And when it all played out, all of a sudden a couple of bad things could happen, you turn the ball over a couple of times, and they make a couple of big plays.”

But at Notre Dame there is no such thing as rebuilding right? However, there is something called recruiting, and apparently suing over a botched gastric bypass (that failed because you didn’t follow the Dr’s orders) was a little more important. The only “signature” win Weis has is that he almost beat USC (the one with national championships) two seasons ago. Willingham’s players are no longer there, the result:

“It was just the 15th season-opening loss in Notre Dame history and the most lopsided, surpassing the 31-10 loss to Pittsburgh to start the 1976 season. It’s also the first time the Irish failed to score a touchdown in a season opener since a 20-12 loss at Michigan in 1985.”

Well at least you aren’t like Michigan…except when they beat you later this year. Then people will be saying “Hey you lost to the team that got embarrassed by a 1-A school”. I can’t wait for that. Keep this up and Lou’ser Granny Holtz will stop picking you to win every game regardless of the opponent.

So I profess on this day 9/2/07.

Notre Dame’s in for a long season. USC might as well start the 3rd string and rest up the starters when they play. Traditional teams that lost to them last year will be licking their chops. Don’t think that Michigan State doesn’t want to face them after last year’s blown lead late. John L. Smith isn’t there to screw this game coming up. Jehuu Caulcrick is gonna have a career game. And you know Michigan will be ready…wait…maybe they will be ready…

I’m an ND fan and I think they’re becoming adept at under developing and screwing up talented athletes. All you ND haters can look forward to 30-50 point ass whippings at the hands of top 10-15 competition as long as Weis remains HC. He’s become nothing more than a younger, albeit much heavier version of Bill Walsh.

Walsh came into the league full of arrogance and disdain for college coaches and in year one he did coach circles around most of his opponents and even clobbered ND in South Bend 33-16. From there on he was dubbed “the genius” by media know nothings. But by year two his genius was fading and Holtz turned the tables on Walsh and the Cardinals 48-24 as did most other teams on Standford’s slate. After year three Billy boy was a punchline and headed to the broadcast booth to avoid further embarrassment.

Weis, like Walsh, had college opponents playing on their heels in year one, but was less successful in year two and it looks like this year he will be taking copious notes on how to design an offense and call plays from his college peers. This “genius” still can’t teach his ND offenses to recognize and counter blitzes by the opposing defenses. He always looks totally bewildered on the sidelines during their lopsided losses. I think he believed other teams would be too scared to show up once they learned of his three super bowl rings as OC of the Patriots.

So not to worry all you ND haters and bashers. It looks as if the ND football program will go quietly into the good night unless Urban Meyer decides to take over next year. Yeah right!

  3. Let’s see…Tyrone Willingham can’t coach…oh wait have you seen what he is doing to Washington? And what do you know…Weis has been playing with Willingham’s recruits. Maybe if Notre Dame can realize before they have a coaching disaster like Alabama did, that their not the “premier” place to coach, and hang on to a coach before firing them after 4 years, they wouldn’t be in the mess that they are now. Charlie Weis hasn’t had anyone playing on their heels, at least any good teams. Except one his signature “almost” beating of USC keyword almost. I don’t hate Notre Dame, I have a lot of respect for them in all actuality. However playing every armed forces team imaginable and Stanford every year will not get it done in the BCS world and don’t think the recruits do not know that. Let Weis stay there another three years including this year before you fire him, then go after someone young who college experience, and change the schedule around or at least join the Big 10 & Notre Dame can be a power again.
