The Tennessee/Mississippi State Grade Book

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on October 20, 2008

The VOLS are still staying alive. While the offense showed some improvement it was the defense that dominated.

Eric Berry broke the SEC career return-yardage record with his 10th career interception in only 21 games.

“I’ve never seen anybody like Eric Berry,” said Fulmer.

“It’s amazing what he does when he has the football in his hands.”

That being said I’m still worried about the offense even though they managed to score 20 of the 34 points.

Let’s review the grades.

Quarterback B+

Stephens was 10 of 20 in the passing game with 136 yards to show for it and continues to run the offense better than the former starting QB which we won’t mention. He showed that he has a good pocket presence and even some wheels when he broke out for an 18 yard run.

Running backs C-

Though the backs are still struggling, Creer is showing excellent vision and cutting ability. He ran for 68 yards in 17 carries. He showed he has a good second effort on his 1 yard TD run.

Wide receivers D

For once I would like to see the offense run on all cylinders. Lucas Taylor made a clutch grab on fourth-down & Denarius Moore reeled in a 45-yard strike from Stephens to stretch the defense. Gerald Jones went out with an ankle sprain and never touched the ball and of course Stocker dropped one. Don’t we have another tight end named Warren? Where was he?

Offensive line C

For once this season they had zero penalties. Miracles do happen! The run blocking improved this game however they are still lacking that dominance that the past O-lines had.

Defensive line A-

Three sacks which is something that has been lacking this season. The tackles did an awesome job jamming up the interior running lanes.

Linebackers A

McKenzie had two sacks and Wilson tipped two passes that resulted in interceptions. McKenzie, however, was faked out of his shoes by the QB in the open field, leading to a first down. McCoy failed to show up again. He only had two tackles.

Secondary A+++++++

Eric Berry & Demetrice Morley each returned interceptions for touchdowns. Berry also had 10 tackles in the game and a QB sack. This secondary might be the best in the SEC.

Special teams D+

Britton Colquitt shanked a 26 yard punt off his foot. Was he drunk? Lincoln Logs continues to struggle by missing a 34-yard field goal. Decent coverage on kick offs and punts. Rogan had a 40 yard runback.

Coaching B

Clearly the best job this season. The game plan was sound. The offense was 7 of 15 on 3rd down conversions. For once Fulmer gambled on 4th down which led to a touchdown.

Overall A-

It was a nice and convincing win and the VOLS got the crowd involved. Though the team still needs work this was a huge step in the right direction. At times they looked somewhat like the Tennessee teams of old.

College Football Week 4 is in the books & here’s what I learned

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on September 21, 2008

So far this season is not like last season but so far so good nonetheless.

Tennessee sucks! Wait I already knew that…expect some more on this subject as the week progresses.

Georgia adds to the PAC 10 non conference woes by beating Arizona State with ease and Oregon did not help matters much by losing to Boise State. Basically everyone in the PAC 10 is playing for second place behind SoCal. Anyone see the awesome dive Moreno did to score the first TD? However he should have received a flag for celebration.

To see it live was awesome.

Missouri failed to impress against Buffalo.

Texas and Texas Tech. both flex some Big 12 muscle yesterday by trouncing their opponents.

And The Tide of Alabama continues to roll however credit 14 points of the 49 they scored to great defense.

South Florida fails to impress.

Not so fast Auburn fans and haters…they do have an offense after all but they lost nevertheless. Les “Big Hat Little Penis” Miles might be at least the 2nd best coach in the SEC. This was easily the best game of the week.

South Carolina gets by 1-AA Wofford…Spurrier can’t be happy right now.

Ohio State is the most over ranked in the top 25, Penn State is the team to beat in the Big Eleven Ten.

BYU is easily this years BCS buster…but let’s not forget about Utah.

East Carolina…fails…but Skip Holtz is still a hot commodity.

Florida State’s offense is simply lost and Wake Forest is the team to bear in the ACC.

Butch Davis better go back to the drawing board because North Carolina isn’t there yet.

Georgia Tech wrecked Miss State and Sly Croom.

Hell has frozen over because right now Vandy is sitting atop the SEC East.

Kansas let’s not forget about them.

Clemson got some frustration out by beating up on SC State.

Fresno State…is still ranked for a reason.

Hey Notre Dame still sucks imagine that.

Pittsburgh pick up your Big East flag & wave it proudly…just like last year Iowa sucks.

Look at Maryland 3-1 and might be ranked come later today.

Boston College could also be ranked as well.

Syracuse actually wins a game, of course it was against a 1-AA opponent but a win is a win.

Cincinnati is still looking like the team to beat in the Big East.

Miami will be scary good by the end of the year.

College Football Week 3 is in the books & here’s what I learned + an update on Joel!!

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on September 14, 2008

First off I have great news. Joel has more than survived his epic bout with Hurricane Ike. Joel suffered no damage however he does not power, but him and his family are safe & dry. He would like to thank all the people that were praying for him.

His next bout will be with the government over the fleecing of gas that has occurred with this hurricane. Did you know that oil prices actually dropped last Friday? Of course not because they spiked to a staggering amount. These refineries only produce 25% of this nation’s gas, and some of that is exported. Nevertheless gas should only go up by 25%, big government should step in but never will.

Ok I just had to get that off my chest. That will be one of few times you’ll see something political on this blog…unless I find some hot photos of Sarah Palin. Is so wrong to lust after a female running for vice president?

South Florida decided to show some Big East pride by beating Kansas. This was a great game. The Kansas QB is awesome. It would be foolish of teams in the NFL not to draft him. I don’t care how tall he is. Think how good Doug Flutie could have been. Trust me there are a lot of NFL teams kicking themselves for not drafting him because of his height.

The Kansas QB reminds me of Vince Young except not as tall, stronger, more accurate, and not suicidal and he isn’t whiner.

Hyped games like the Nuts verses the Contraceptives suck. The SoCal-Ohio State was b-o-r-i-n-g. Let’s face it. Right now SoCal is that good. I don’t care if Beanie Wells didn’t play. The score wouldn’t have changed that much.

Under hyped games rule!! Kansas-South Florida & Fresno State-Wisconsin were awesome games.

Georgia failed to impress. However some of you might remember back in August that I predicted that Garcia would make his debut in the Georgia game and I was right. Self ^5.

Oklahoma continues to impress as Ty Willingham might need to start packing his bags.

Missouri looks great!

LSU did what LSU was supposed to do and beat a nobody team convincingly.

Does Auburn have an offense or is the defense of Miss. State that good?

The Tide continues to roll and they will be rolling next week as they play the worst SEC team in Arkansas. And even though the Texas-Arkansas was postponed, Texas would have crushed them.

East Carolina pulls out a squeaker and the R-E-S-P-E-C-T factor is falling with them as it is with Georgia Tech as well.

People better watch out for Ole Miss and Nebraska.

Everyone point and laugh at the PAC 10 this week. Sure USC rolled and Oregon pulled out a miracle but Arizona State lost to UNLV, UCLA got ass raped by the Mormons of BYU, Cal lost to Maryland….that right there deserves a LOL.

The ACC isn’t fairing any better as well with Virginia losing to UCONN big. Remember UCONN struggled against Temple last week.

Cutcliff is winning at Duke though. Way to go Coach!

Oh La La almost pulled off another epic upset against Illinois yesterday.

Penn State looks impressive I mean very impressive.

Oklahoma State continues to roll and roll big.

OMG Kentucky is undefeated.

Utah continues to roll. How important will the Utah-BYU game this year?

The Notre Dame defense looks good then again it was against Michigan. However Charlie Weis is more man than Tom Brady by electing not to have surgery on his busted up leg. Get better Coach I hate to pick on gimps.

I have a post coming up about the Tennessee game.

Did anyone notice how Herbstreit finally admits Mark Sanchez will probably be a Heisman finalist after side stepping the question?

Finally has anyone noticed how eerily similar that USC QB Mark Sanchez resembles Richard Ramirez AKA the serial killer known as the Night Stalker? (Insert scary music here)

Breaking Down the Tennessee Volunteers 08 Recruiting Class

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on February 7, 2008

Well signing day has come and gone and of course pessimistic Volunteer fans aren’t happy with this years class. One thing they seem to forget is Tennessee was only going to sign a small number of players this year due to the large numbers they signed last year. Not to mention that fact Tennessee isn’t really losing many players.

I’m here to breakdown this years class and predict their future as it relates to Tennessee football. Then the pessimists shall be silenced.

CBS is Finding a New Way to Screw Over SEC B-Ball Fans Unless Your Team is Kentucky. Reposted

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on December 20, 2007

I originally posted this on 10/29/07. I received a lot of nasty e-mails from Kentucky basketball fans who are the equivalent to Alabama football fans. Now after an embarrassing four game skid maybe CBS will wake up. Then again watching Kentucky lose is rather entertaining. (Snicker Gardner Webb)

CBS or as I like to call it See BS, is the most watch network on Television. They have such riveting shows such as CSI (insert city name here), The Amazing Race & Survivor. While I detest all these shows it should be noted I detest most non-sports television with the exception of Hell’s Kitchen because Chef Ramsey rocks.

Being the sports programming president must a stressful job I’m sure, why else would they choose to air seven Kentucky games this season, which is at least four more times than any other SEC team and five more times than Tennessee.

If anyone should be upset about this, that someone should be Billy Donovan and his bad back. After all since Kentucky’s last trip to the final four, Florida has been to three final fours and captured back to back national titles as well. LSU has also been to a final four since the last time Kentucky has been there. Only Ashley Judd gives Kentucky more love than CBS and I would like to give something to Ashley Judd….but let’s stick to the topic.

This season, CBS is choosing to send crews to seven Kentucky games, three Florida games, two Tennessee games and one game each for Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

The Vanderbilt, Georgia and Arkansas appearances, as well as one Florida and one Tennessee appearance, come against – guess who? – uh huh that’s right Kentucky.

If memories earned you TV dates, more people would remember Florida’s national championships than Kentucky’s. If expectations sent the networks scrambling to video your bandwagon, Tennessee is the only SEC team that’s a consensus pre-season top-10 pick. Trouble is, Kentucky has another edge this season, a new UK coach and that means a renewed enthusiasm for Kentucky basketball.

What do you do? Pearl’s already done it.

You take off your shirt and paint your chest. You open your mouth and pour out your heart. You put out a must-see product that’s more than ready for its close-up, and then you call out the network that prefers to live in the past much like the Alabama fans. Pearl should just keep sweating and screaming and coaching his shirt off. If he does his job, CBS will have to add two more Tennessee games.

So go ahead CBS, air more Kentucky games, ESPN will pick up the others like they have in the past. Somewhere down the road, in between the making of the new show CSI Narnia & David Letterman’s top ten list of why CBS Sports sucks, a network official will start to wonder why viewers aren’t watching as much basketball on CBS as they are on ESPN. Maybe then they’ll get a clue.

GO VOLS!!!!!

So I profess on this day 12/20/07.

This Weekends Games Could Be the End All Be All For Some.

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on November 22, 2007

This college football season has been the craziest and the best ever!!! This weekends games are bountiful. Here are the ones you should be paying attention to and why.

Tonight

No. 11 USC at No. 6 Arizona State (ESPN, 8 p.m. ET)

If USC beats Arizona State, then it’s bye-bye to any BCS dreams for the Sun Devils. I for one will be pulling for USC just for the Gridiron Goddess’s sake & I think the ASU coach is a douche bag.

Friday

Nebraska at Colorado (ABC, noon ET)

This game used to mean something something now it’s irrelevant…or is it? This is pretty much Callahan’s last stand, that’s evident, but on the other side of the ball Dan Hawkins has a chance to take Colorado to a bowl game in his second year. Let’s face it, Colorado was mess of stripper allegations and recruiting violations when he took over. He’s has done a great job. I’ll admit I’m somewhat a Nebraska fan, but Callahan is a dick who should have been fired weeks ago.. Let’s go Buffs!

Ole Miss at Miss. State (JP “Jesus Christ We Suck” Sports, 12:30 p.m. ET)

Sly Croom already has my SEC coach of the year vote. Before the season started the Croom coffin was already built, only the undertaker needed to be called. Now Miss State is bowl eligible with wins over Auburn & Bama, thus proving they are the best program in Alabama. 🙂 Coach 0 and his 20 thieves can end the season on a high note with a win. If he does that he’ll be yaw yawing to another top 10 recruiting class.

Arkansas at No. 1 LSU (CBS, 2:30 p.m. ET)

Bottom line if LSU slips here no national title and you’ll see signs like below pop up all over Cajun country.

Too fucking funny….

If Arkansas wins & maybe more importantly D. Mac has a good game then his name is back in the Heisman race. Even though Coach Nutt claims those only “rumors” about his stepping down…everyone know he’s gone. Maybe…just maybe…he could stay with a win.

No. 13 Texas at Texas A&M (ABC, 3:30 p.m. ET)

Coach Fran’s last game before the new coach (more about that later) is possibly announced. Coach Fran has already shown he loves money more than the confidence of his players. Why is he even still there is beyond me. A win could be good for Fran and any high school coaching jobs he might be inline for in the future.

Saturday

No. 18 Tennessee at Kentucky (CBS, 1:30 p.m. ET)

Coach Fulmer and Tennessee fans such as myself have experienced a roller coaster year. A win here sends the Vols to the SEC championship game to be slaughtered by LSU. A loss here means that maybe Tennessee is looking for another coach next season.

No. 7 Georgia at Georgia Tech (ABC, 3:30 p.m. ET)

The only thing that is hotter than Georgia’s playing right now, is Chan’s ass on the Tech hot seat. A win could knock Georgia out of a BCS bowl birth. A lose could knock Chan out of a job.

Florida State at No. 12 Florida (CBS, 5 p.m. ET)

Even though Matt Stafford was quoted as saying

“Let me say somebody so you guys won’t say I just won’t vote for Tebow,” he said. “Let’s say Darren McFadden. He’s been doing it a long time, and he deserves it.”

A win could give Tebow a Heisman as a true sophomore. A win also could have people wondering is time to replace Bobby as coach. A FSU win will send the Gators spiraling down the polls, and no trophy for Teabag Tebow.

No. 22 Clemson at South Carolina (ESPN2, 7 p.m. ET)

I live in Columbia SC, but I grew up in Greenville SC. So I’ve been around both fan bases for an extended time. These people hate each other. The Tigers were a dropped TD pass away from the ACC championship game, God Spurrier’s Gamecock squad was ranked 6th in the country, that was before four straight losses. A win for Clemson, whose fan base is the ACC’s version of Bama’s fan base meaning delusional, will keep Tommy Bowden around for another year.

A loss for USC could mean God Spurrier jets to take the A&M job. According to Scout.com’s “sources”

There’s no doubt there’s serious interest on both sides. As I said yesterday, the USC admin is very wary of Spurrier possibly leaving due to his dissatisfaction over the disposition of two high priority recruits that had passed the NCAA Clearinghouse yet hit some hurdle in getting admitted by the university.

There is a ton of smoke surrounding Spurrier and that’s where many early signs are pointing to, but at this late hour at night I can’t confirm that it’s a done deal or near done deal.”

Now God Spurrier has said he plans on staying at USC. The last big name coach who said he is planning on staying somewhere was Saban, and we all know how that turned out. Spurrier has also been forced to admit he was wrong and regrets hyping up his team of felons. In fact this week has been a week of retractions all around for the Old Ball Sack Coach. In an press conference Tuesday, God Spurrier, stated:

“To me, attitude is everything, and right now, our attitude is sorry. We can’t worry about the winning or losing, we have to concern ourselves with playing football at a very high level — and obviously that’s something we haven’t done.”

But of course he pulled a “Saban” on Wednesday:

“I said our attitude stinks, but the attitude of our guys is pretty good … I said it wrong and I told our team that I was mistaken,”

My question is why would A&M even want him? The program is no better in his third year there, than it was when he took over. In Grannie Holtz’s third year at South Carolina he was taking them to back to back Outback Bowl victories. A loss here would mean a 6-6 record, and possibly no bowl game whatsoever.

No. 4 Missouri at No. 2 Kansas (ABC, 8 p.m. ET)

If Kansas wins they are one step closer to the unbelievable, if Missouri wins they have a chance to make it all the way, and their QB takes a step closer to the Heisman.

Alabama at Auburn (ESPN, 8 p.m. ET)

Bama has 3 straight loses. The liberal media have started to turn against Saban, referring to the Tide as the Tide’tanic. A win here might make the Bama faithful forget about getting Croomed back to back and losing to Oh La La. For Auburn I believe they are going for six in a row. (If I’m wrong please correct me) Tommy T. has also been linked to the A&M job, but he flatly as said he’s happy at Auburn and he wants to stay. A win here could insure a contract extension.

I hope you’re enjoying your Turkey day and remember:

So I profess on this day 11/22/07

TtT

Coach 0 & the 20 Thieves

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on November 19, 2007

Yaw yaw Who Wants Some? Come On!!

Coach 0 is starting to show signs of becoming a good SEC coach. A perfect example of this is even though 20 players were caught stealing from hotels for a second time, he doesn’t suspend them, no he only places them on “probation”. Story

Look out God Spurrier, Fulmer, Saban & Meyer there’s a new weak disciplinarian in town. He goes by Coach 0. Some of the items taken were pillows, radios, those little bars of soap, an ice machine, 2 house keepers & a La Quinta Inn billboard. Coach 0 quickly got some boosters to pay for the items so they would be able to play against Mississippi State. Like they say in those Guinness ads “Brilliant”!

“Yaw yaw yaw thieving Brent Schaffer yaw yaw yaw” Coach 0 said.

Which translates to:

“Any actions similar to this will result in more severe penalties which may but highly doubtful include dismissal from the team or washing my balls.”

This is the fourth time Coach 0 has had to swing his “justice hammer” this season. Of course the other times involved those mythical team rules. He even suspended the SEC sack leader Greg Hardy for two games. See how smart Coach 0 is becoming, you break team rules you’re suspended, you break the law, you’re “on probation”.

Ole Miss is refusing to give out a list of the offenders, another brilliant move. If Coach 0 would have placed 21 players on probation I might refer to him as a genius, since 21 is Jerrell Powe’s IQ.

So I profess on this day 11/19/07

The Revelations After a Saturdays Worth of Football Week 11

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on November 11, 2007

#1 tOSU falls, more chaos for the BCS. This is the best college football season ever!

I’ve already said my piece about Ohio State, but Ron Zook might the Big Eveleen Ten coach of the year.

If Kansas wins out they will play for the national championship. The game against Missouri looms larger than the Kansas coach.

Boston College proves why they were over ranked.

Mark Richt is pumping up the crowd on the sidelines, getting the black jerseys for his players…he’s finally coming out of his shell. No team wants to play Georgia right now. Ask Auburn.

Virginia Tech might be better than what some of us thought.

Welcome back to realty Michigan, however you still have a chance of beating tOSU next week.

Ha Ha Ha Uconn got beat, another Big Least team has their BCS dreams crushed.

South Carolina went from ranked 6 in the country to a joke during their four game losing streak.

It doesn’t matter how many point Nebraska scored against K-State, Callahan is a goner.

NC State is slowly and quietly becoming bowl eligible.

Notice how the Gamecock fans were gone by the middle of the 4th quarter? Yep the old USC is back. 🙂

The old Cal team is back is well.

For the last game played in the Orange Bowl, one would think Miami would at least put up a fight.

The offense of Clemson is playing as well anyone in the nation.

Kentucky denies Vandy a chance to be bowl eligible. By the way I got a lot of grief from Kentucky fans over this post. So even though the embarrassing lose to Gardner-Webb isn’t football related, all I can say is: Ha ha ha your team really sucks. 🙂

Service Academies 2 Notre Dame 0.

And finally Joel is writing an in-depth piece on Coach Croom. But all I have to say is this:

Others have been fired because of this.

So I profess on this day 11/11/07.

CBS is Finding a New Way to Screw Over SEC B-Ball Fans Unless Your Team is Kentucky.

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on October 29, 2007

So I profess on this day 10/29/07.
